Excellent design. A little awkward visualizing the board with uniform pieces. It takes more time to scan and recognize the position because of how small and similar they look. I know there's a larger board with more recognizable pieces, but I'd rather have the smaller form factor. The other issue is that the magnets are not rare earth and there is no rubber or texture on the bottom of the pieces. Just smooth plastic on plastic which means don't expect the board to hold the position if dropped, or even bumped. Also when simply closing the board, pieces near joints get pressed together and one or both of the touching pieces will shift. Stronger magnets, rubber bases or a magnetized peg board configuration are needed to make this $60 chess board have proper value for money. Hype vs. Design ratio is a little off with this one, unfortunately. Otherwise I really do like the concept as a travel board or for casual play, but don't get it as your first set. You're better off owning it as a second or even third board, and only then if you can find a discount code.
Great travel game. Pieces are easy to grasp and magnets are strong enough to avoid accidental sliding. Love the cup holder fit and how quick it is to put away or restart play. Lightweight and not bulky.
My son wanted a board he could take on the road with him. It works great! Pieces stay in place when he has to move and fits great in a backpack!. 10 out of 10!
This game stays in my backpack to play on the go wherever I go. I have been able to play a couple times with friends and family and I absolutely love the compact design and magnetic pieces!
Excellent product! We've had the standard Venture Board for years and finally got the XL upgrade along with checkers pieces. Great quality and perfect for road trips.
I purchased the smaller size first - which is alright if you want something truly compact for a backpacking trip or whatever. The pieces are all identical with stickers to distinguish them (and the stickers are solid with replacements provided).
That being said, I prefer this larger size with unique pieces that make them more easily identifiable. Either one is a solid choice depending on your situation, but to me the smaller board is only preferable if you're really trying to minimize the space of the set.
Hi when I got my board i opened it and the back row was snapped. I can still use it and I love it but I really wanted it to be good because I don’t get anything for myself and I just wanted it to be right.

This boards looks amazing and Im itching to buy it...just one thing...the King and Queen look too much alike. I'm afraid I might get them confused when playing. Maybe think about redesigning the King or queen to be more distinct from each other? But beautiful board and awesome concept! Congratulations!

The Ventureboard chess set is simply outstanding. The build quality and portability make it perfect for travel. I’ve already taken it on a plane trip, where I ended up playing with another passenger, and on a motorcycle trip, where I played with friends and practiced openings. It packs easily, sets up quickly, and makes it effortless to enjoy chess anywhere. I was so impressed that I went on to purchase the Venture GO, Backgammon, and XL Chess boards as well. Highly recommend this product to anyone who loves board games and wants to take them on the go!

I love everything but the black on black - when the gray and yellow points are covered it is hard to see the black magnets
I was looking for a chess set that was cat proof and ran across this one. I ended up ordering two. I gave one to my friend who is a bartender and we play while she is working. Now we don’t have to take photos of where we left off! We just roll up the board until next time! I love this thing!
It’s great for what it is! A 9 by 9 board I can take with me to practice or whenever I get bored. The magnets are solid and the pieces do stay on the board during travel. I have noticed when you stack them to the side they can sometimes move or connect to each other weird, but I haven’t encountered anything when they’re stacked one high on the actual board. The noice is also really nice for a magnetic Go set in my opinion, it doesn’t replace a regular board and stones but for travel it’s worth it!
I bought this simple travel board for the work office for quick games. The only thing I don't love about this is the background color being darker than the lines. Typically in Go the lines are dark with a light background, which helps visualize the pieces. If this were made with the covers inverted (like the checker board) this would be 5 stars from me.
I previously left a fairly negative review and I want to amend that. After that review, the team reached out to remedy the issue and sent a new board to me, saying the problem I experienced was atypical. I still wish the magnets were a bit stronger, but I overlooked the travel bag they include to prevent the board from opening when I last complained, and the incredible customer support has made a believer of me. I want to support an independent, small company, and overall it's a great product. I have since recommended this board to other chess lovers and wouldn't hesitate to buy one again in the future.
The board is very well designed. It is quality,i t is portable, and it keeps pieces in place. This is everything you could ask for with a portable chess/checkers set.
Very high quality, innovative and aesthetically pleasing. I love every board from this company so much that I collected them all. We use all of the boards on vacation, on the airplane, restaurants and breweries. We absolutely love them! Now I just need Mancala and Chinese Checkers! Much love to the VB team!
